Flying Colors Butterfly Sanctuary - Bohol Countryside Tour

I always wanted to go to a butterfly sanctuary and our Bohol trip made it happen. One of our itineraries for our Bohol Countryside Tour by Kuya Dodong is a place called "Flying Colors Butterfly Sanctuary". It is not as large as I thought it would be (like a dome garden) but it has all the simple amenities that a butterfly garden should have. It's a big kubo-type facility (with bamboo floors and all) with a small but lovely garden at the back of it where the live butterflies are situated.

Entrance

We were greeted by a poor lizard (I dont know what type) at the entrance atop of a donation box. It was tied up by its waist so it won't go anywhere. I was only looking at it when our tour guide Kuya Lloyd grabbed the lizard and put it on my arm. I was too shocked to react that before my brain freaked out, I asked my papa to take pictures of us. After it, I calmly put it back on its place and took big breaths. Wooh. I'm really not fond of reptiles.

Oh hello there.

Mama, what are you doing? hahah

In the sanctuary, there are guides standing by to give tourist an educational insight about the butterflies and moths. Although, I have to admit, I was too busy taking pictures to listen. Haha. Only papa is the only one who listened intently. The only info I got from the tour was that you can use a chrysalis as an accessory (i.e. earrings) for a week before the moth comes out of it. It is cruel to imagine but I want to try it once :P

Ma! Photobomber din kayo no?

After we were introduced to different types of caterpillars and their metamorphosis stages, the tour guide encouraged us to take a picture with the pretty butterflies and moths that are preserved and displayed on their walls. He is kind enough to take a picture of us so none of us will be left out of the picture.

There was also this thing that what they call the butterfly wing effect where you get an illusion like you have butterfly wings on your pictures. A glass frame was suspended in the middle of the room with colorful preserved butterflies in it. What the subject do is stand at the back of the glass frame, their backs facing it while still looking at the frame. While the photographer standing in front of the glass frame, with the right angle and position, can use the butterflies in the frame and make an illusion that their subject has butterfly wings. Instant metamorphosis, instant mariposa!! <3

After the photo op, we were led at the back of the kubo into the garden. It is pretty small. With a tree in the middle of it, you can walk around the garden in maybe 30 steps or less. Haha. But despite the size, its really pretty and picture perfect. Be careful though, the stone floor is slippery when wet.

Inside the garden. It's starting to drizzle when we got there.

We had a chance to take a picture with some butterflies flying around the garden. The tour guide caught some and put it on us. He used some kind of paste to "tame" the butterflies. Here's some of the photo op results:

You can buy souvenirs after the tour at their, of course, butterfly-themed shop. If you are going to Bohol, spare 30 minutes of your time and visit this sanctuary. It's worth it. Entrance fee is 50 pesos per person.
